Angiosperm (flowering plant) having an embryo
with a single cotyledon, or seed leaf (as
opposed to dicotyledons, which have two).
Monocotyledons usually have narrow leaves
with parallel veins and smooth edges, and
hollow or soft stems. Their flower parts are
arranged in threes. Most are small plants
such as orchids, grasses, and lilies, but
some are trees such as palms.
